Grammy Remix with Bobbie Thomas Shout Out!
Six years ago, Bobbie Thomas was on the Today show talking about what to expect from the Grammy Red Carpet and if you thought of any way to "remix" the dresses that were worn by the celebs to post to twitter and hashtag for her to see what you came up with for redesign. I was willing to take this challenge on and used what I taught myself and what I learned in college to show what I believed would have been the best way to change red carpet dresses to would have taken them to the next level.
I watched the E! Red Carpet and got to work trying to think of what needed to be changed and then finding the photos that I could use in order to show what was in my head. I have always had this ability to think of what could be changed in order to make something perfect for the event. I founded a company, after college, on the idea of reconstruction because I idea of taking something that was already made and making it my own is always in my wheelhouse. The love that I have for fashion and what it could be is possibly surprising to most that I grew up with. I was a tomboy. The girl that would wear her soccer shorts under her Sunday dress just in case the boys were willing to allow a girl to play.
While in high school, after busting my right knee while playing soccer [with girls] I wasn't able to play sport anymore. I started to show an interest and really explore fashion. I read books in my spare time, sketched all the time, and learned as much as I could about the industry. I designed 3 out of 4 of my homecoming dresses in high school & my senior prom dress, along with helping another friend design hers.
In college, the idea of integrating fashion into graphic design was not something that was received well by the head of my department. I powered through and made sure that I always stayed true to who I was and what I wanted. When I was done with college, what I was doing was very ahead of the curve and an uphill battle, but this request of Bobbie's to show how you would change fashion that was walking a red carpet was right up my alley.
I worked for hours getting the designs to look the way that I thought that they should and posting as many photos as possible to maybe give Bobbie options to hopefully be noticed. When I woke up the next morning, my phone had notifications for me from Bobbie herself. I was so excited! For the first time, the ideas that I had of what could be done to red carpet dresses was seen! It was recognized! Then when watching the 4th hour of the Today Show, she showed some of the ideas that I had sent to her!
Since this year, it hasn't been something that has been presented in the same manner for the red carpet shows, but I still do this every time there is a red carpet; "what would i do differently? what would have looked better? how could I have made this dress perfection?"
This was when i realized that after all this time, ideas that I had in my head were worth it. After all the years of people telling me that my ideas were not worth it, or that what I felt like I was supposed to do with my life might actually be just what I should do. I sent Bobbie a DM and told her how much I appreciated her shout outs to me and helping me understand what I was really good at. I know it has been 6 years since this, but it is still something I do mentally, and I do still reconstruct outfits for myself.
This will hopefully be something that I can do on Mod Twinsets & Pearls in future red carpet seasons!
