Real Life Barbie
My first Halloween, being back in Texas, we decided to have a costume party! Jenn, Melanie and I decided to co-host a party; Melanie & Jenn had been co-hosting parties the last couple years for Halloween, and this year, we decided to do at my house. We wanted to create a fun theme that would allow everyone to dress up as though we were kids again; dress up as your favorite character/toy from your childhood!
I created a 3D invite that looked like a miniature cape made out of felt with some thin ribbon with the idea that most would probably come as superheroes, and we carried that theme throughout the house with "pow," "bam" and "superhero" servers, canvases with embroidery floss art, and neon skylines that covered the walls through most of the main areas. Jenn's husband even created a fun, cartoon pinup style, superhero & heroine faceless board that everyone could take pics with their faces in them!
We actually kept everything a secret as to what we were dressing up as; even Melanie, Jenn and I didn't share with each other! We wanted to all have a surprise when we got to see each other. Melanie got there first, but she wasn't dressed yet as she was going to help me set up. We all got ready just before people were to show up; Melanie as Batman & I was Dr. Barbie! Jenn came as Marge Simpson, my mom was Wilma from Scooby Doo.
As the night continued, because we were at my house, I decided to do Barbie to the furthest extent that I possibly could, so I changed multiple times! For me, I loved Barbie growing up. I loved that she could be anything that I wanted her to be, but I mostly loved as I was allowed to use scissors growing up, that I could create outfits for her. Back then, I think everyone, even me, chalked it up to just having an imagination, but I would take scrap fabric from my mom's stash and create something original for my Barbie.
Flash forward to high school, and I started sketching ideas of Homecoming and Prom dresses, and working with my mom on the ideas & fabric. I went to college for graphic design, however, I always incorporated fashion into my projects and presentations. I love fashion & whether it is making something my own, or making something completely from scratch, I love being able to think outside of the box and create something! My decision to pick Barbie only made sense for the theme that we had picked, as I feel like Barbie allowed me to imagine beyond playing with dolls and allowed me to believe that I could be whatever I wanted when I grew up.
